A Journey to Overcome Weakness

My name is Melina, I'm 18 and i've been crossfitting since December of 2011. Since then I've become completely addicted to the lifestyle and community.

My love of food has grown exponentially since I started eating (mostly) paleo (most of the time).

So here's some stuff I find interesting, inspiring, or would just like to eat.

Squatsquatsquat

Today was the heaviest i’ve gone in at least a month and a half.

We were going for 2-4 rep maxes, I went for 205 but both times i tried i just couldn’t get the second one up. Oh well. Then we did a drop set at 80% for max reps. I did 155 for 7. Pretty happy with it overall.

WODs so far this week

My mom and I are trying out a different gym in the area. It’s closer to where I’ll be going to school in the fall and it’s got some great trainers who we already know. We’re taking a rest day today because the last two days have left us sore as hell and my mom is pretty tuckered out.

Monday

“Lynne”

5 rounds of

Max rep bench press (95#)

Max rep pull ups (kipping)

I’m pretty sure my total score was 73.

Tuesday

4-6 RM front squat (5@145)

max reps @80% x1 (10@115)

then

4 rounds of

50 air squats

400 m run

Finished in 14:06

And we’re gonna try to make the 8 AM again tomorrow. It’s a good time. Not too early, not too late.

I started a new job this week so I haven’t had much time for anything at all. But I managed to squeeze in a mini wod this morning before my first appointment with a customer.

Warm up:
About a half hour of yoga, focusing mainly on back and hip mobility

10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 sit ups
After each set of sit ups, do 7 burpees.

For a home wod that was pretty good and it helped me catch up on the 100 day burpee challenge. Today is 42, and yesterday I only did 10 so I had to add 31 to today to make up for that, but it all ended up working out.

Now if only my brother would get out of the shower because I’m just sweating on my bedroom floor.

The goal of today’s workout was simply to survive.

12 minute amrap

25 10 double unders

15 kettlebell swings (55, 45)

2 sled pushes

Done in groups of three. Each person does a different exercise and when all finish, rotate to the next one. 

I think we finished 4 rounds. Nobody really keeps track on Saturday mornings.

One thing I’ve noticed in my paleo adventures is that the cleaner I eat, the worse my workouts suffer when I don’t. 

I always notice that when I eat dairy the night before a workout, my cardio tanks. And then after a while I forget and have some cheese on a Friday night. Oops.

WOD

Today my mom and I went to a gym recently opened by a couple guys who used to go to ours. 

Besides all the equipment being beautiful and new, the trainers and atmosphere were quite different. 

They were more encouraging and pushed us during the workout.  They made sure to start on time and proceed in a timely manner through the skillwork, which they kept a close eye on and actually helped me iron out a few problems that I had with my cleans, which I could kind of feel but I was unsure what exactly I was doing wrong. 

The actual WOD was

3 rounds of

1 minute wall balls (14 lbs)

1 minute tire flips

1 minute push presses (65 lbs)

1 minute burpees

1 minute sled pushes

Done in pairs, each partner alternating reps.

I’m not sure how many reps we finished exactly but I think it was 140ish. It was hard to keep track of, but It was a really great workout and I had a lot of fun.

I’m considering going to this gym in the fall since it’s only 10 minutes away from where I’m going to school. We’ll see.

The rowing was outside and I could smell the pine trees. So beautiful today.
95 is getting pretty comfortable during wods. I think I need to step that up :)

I actually don’t mind this picture.
This was after a db complex WOD where I had to go lighter than I had wanted because the guys were using the 25s and 30s and I knew I couldn’t handle the 35s and 40s.
But hey, I got through it faster and pushed myself to be uncomfortable.

I am constantly going back and forth between conflicting insecurities. One day I’ll feel inadequate athletically, not strong enough, think that I should be working harder, lifting more, spending more time at the gym. The next I’ll wish I was more feminine-looking, had a smaller waist, bigger boobs to the point where I actually have thought about giving up crossfit entirely.

With the terrible rain and flooding in my area, I decided to do a home WOD with my mom.

800 m run

50 pull ups

50 push ups

50 air squats

800 m run

Done in 19:32, RX

I have an old home made pull up bar in my basement, which works fine enough except I can’t cycle kipping pull ups because it rotates when I swing on it. So the pull ups were broken up into sets of 2 and 3 at best.

I wanted to walk so badly on the second run. That’s one of my top issues that I need to work on, being persistent while running. So today I forced myself however I could to keep running. Guys, I was imagining people running with me, I was practically talking to myself out loud. Anything to keep from walking. I wanted to get under 20 minutes, damn it, and I did. 

Great WOD. Now for some lunch, TV and then hanging out with a friend.
